First-Timer's Handbook (첫 한국 여행): Everything You Need Before You Land
The travelers who struggle in Korea almost always have the same problem: they didn't know what to set up before they arrived.
Korea is an extraordinarily easy country to navigate once you have the right tools. Without them — no local SIM, no T-money card, no translation app, cash in the wrong denomination — the first day involves unnecessary friction that colors everything that follows. This guide is the checklist that solves that before it starts.
입국 전 (Before You Arrive)
비자 (Visa): Citizens of approximately 112 countries can enter Korea visa-free for 30–90 days depending on nationality. Check the Korean Immigration Service website for your specific country. The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) — required for some visa-exempt nationalities — is applied online in advance and costs approximately ₩10,000.
환전 (Currency exchange): Korean Won (₩) cannot be easily obtained outside Korea. Options on arrival:
인천공항 환전소 (Incheon Airport exchange counters) — available 24 hours, rates are reasonable
명동 사설 환전소 (Myeongdong private exchange booths) — often the best rates in Seoul; bring your home currency in cash
ATMs at airports and convenience stores accept most international cards with a ₩1,000–₩2,000 fee per transaction
Carry some cash. Korea is highly cashless, but traditional markets, small neighborhood restaurants, and some transport options still prefer or require it.
여행자 보험 (Travel insurance): Korea's medical care is excellent and affordable by Western standards, but emergency hospitalization or medical evacuation can still produce significant costs. Travel insurance with medical coverage is recommended.
도착 후 첫 번째 (First Things on Arrival)
유심 카드 (SIM Card): Purchase at Incheon Airport immediately on arrival — booths are located in the arrivals hall before customs exit and after. Options:
단기 데이터 유심 (Short-term data SIM): 5–30 days, data-only, ₩15,000–₩35,000
데이터+통화 유심 (Data + calls): More expensive but useful if you need a Korean number
Pocket WiFi rental is available at the airport as an alternative for groups sharing a device.
T-money 카드 (T-money Card): Buy at any convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) or subway station vending machine. Load ₩30,000–₩50,000 initially. Usable on subways, buses, and taxis throughout Korea. Do not skip this step — it simplifies every journey.
필수 앱 (Essential Apps):
앱 (App) | 용도 (Use) |
|---|---|
네이버 지도 (Naver Maps) | Navigation — more accurate than Google Maps for Korea |
카카오 T (Kakao T) | Taxi booking — English interface available |
파파고 (Papago) | Translation — Naver's translation app, better than Google Translate for Korean |
배달의민족 (Baemin) | Food delivery — English version available |
카카오톡 (KakaoTalk) | Messaging — how Koreans communicate; useful for guesthouse/host contact |
언어 장벽 (Language Barrier)
Korean is not an easy language for English speakers. But navigating Korea without Korean is entirely achievable with the right approach.
한글 읽기 (Reading Hangul): The Korean alphabet can be learned to a basic reading level in 1–2 hours. You won't understand what you're reading, but being able to sound out menu items, station names, and signs dramatically improves navigation. It is worth the investment before arrival.
번역 도구 (Translation tools): Papago's camera translation — point your phone camera at Korean text — handles menus, signs, and product labels reliably. Google Lens works similarly.
영어 통용도 (English availability): High in tourist areas, major hotels, airport, and transit systems. Limited in neighborhood restaurants, local markets, and outside major cities. Showing a restaurant a photo of what you want to eat works universally.
Tip — 번역 카메라 활용 (Using Camera Translation): Before sitting down at a restaurant without an English menu, open Papago or Google Lens, switch to camera mode, and scan the menu board. Most menu items become identifiable within seconds. This single skill removes approximately 80% of language-related travel friction in Korea.
알아두면 좋은 것들 (Good to Know)
영업시간 (Operating hours): Convenience stores are open 24 hours. Most restaurants open 11am–9pm or 10pm, with a break period (브레이크타임) often from 3–5pm. Museums typically close Mondays. Palaces have specific closing days — check before visiting.
팁 문화 (Tipping culture): Korea does not have a tipping culture. Do not tip at restaurants, taxis, hair salons, or hotels. It will cause confusion and occasionally mild embarrassment. Service is included in the price — and the service standard is high regardless.
콘센트 (Power outlets): Korea uses Type C and F plugs (the two-round-pin European standard), 220V. North American and British plugs need adapters. Most hotels provide adapters on request; buying one at an airport convenience store is ₩3,000–₩5,000.
화장실 (Public toilets): Abundantly available — subway stations, convenience stores, parks, department stores. Generally clean. Some older facilities provide toilet paper outside the stall rather than inside — take it before entering.
대중목욕탕·찜질방 (Jjimjilbang): Korean bathhouse/sauna — open 24 hours, doubles as overnight accommodation for approximately ₩10,000–₩15,000 per person. A uniquely Korean experience and a budget accommodation option in emergencies.
