Gangwon (강원): Mountains, Snow & the East Coast

강원도 (Gangwon Province) is where Koreans go when they want nature. It is also, per capita, the least visited province by international tourists — which makes it worth knowing.

The province runs along Korea's northeastern border with North Korea, covering a third of the country's land area with less than 3% of its population. What fills that space: 설악산 (Seoraksan), the most dramatic mountain range in Korea. The 동해 (East Sea), with a coastline of pine-covered cliffs and white sand beaches. Ski resorts that hosted the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. A network of mountain villages, Buddhist temples, and seafood towns that change character completely between seasons.

Gangwon does not have a single entry point or a single reason to visit. It has a dozen — and it rewards planning according to which season brings you.

강원의 구조 (Gangwon's Structure)

Gangwon divides naturally along the 태백산맥 (Taebaek Mountain Range), the spine of the province:

영서 (Interior / West of mountains): 춘천 (Chuncheon), 원주 (Wonju), 강릉에서 서쪽 지역 — valleys, lakes, and the approaches to the ski resorts. Less dramatic coastal scenery, more accessible from Seoul.

영동 (Coastal / East of mountains): The East Sea coast — Gangneung (강릉), Sokcho (속초), Samcheok (삼척). The coastline itself, the seafood, and the access point for Seoraksan are all here.

The KTX connects Seoul to Gangneung in 1h 54min — opened for the PyeongChang Olympics and now one of the most useful infrastructure additions for Gangwon tourism.

설악산 (Seoraksan)

Korea's most spectacular mountain and the centerpiece of Gangwon's natural attractions. 설악산국립공원 (Seoraksan National Park) divides into three areas:

외설악 (Outer Seoraksan) — 속초 (Sokcho side): The most visited area. 신흥사 (Sinheungsa Temple) at the base, and above it the dramatic rock formations of 울산바위 (Ulsanbawi Rock) — a 2–3 hour round trip hike to the viewing platform. Cable car to 권금성 (Gwongeumseong fortress) provides the aerial view without the climb. The 비룡폭포 (Biryong Falls) trail is accessible and beautiful.

내설악 (Inner Seoraksan) — 인제 (Inje side): Longer, quieter, less crowded. The 백담사 (Baekdamsa Temple) — deep in a valley at the end of a shuttle bus route — is one of Korea's most atmospheric temples, reached by walking the last 4km along a river gorge.

남설악 (South Seoraksan) — 오색 (Osaek): Hot spring area and the approach to the 대청봉 (Daecheongbong, 1,708m) summit via the 오색 trail — one of the steeper routes.

최적 시기 (Best time): Late September to mid-October for autumn foliage — Seoraksan turns before anywhere else in Korea and is considered the nation's best foliage destination.

강릉 (Gangneung)

강릉 (Gangneung) is Gangwon's eastern hub and one of Korea's most pleasant mid-sized cities. It was the host of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics ice events.

커피 도시 (Coffee City): Gangneung has the highest density of specialty coffee shops per capita of any city in Korea — a reputation that emerged from the local barista culture and has made it a coffee pilgrimage destination. The 안목 해변 (Anmok Beach) coffee street — dozens of cafés along the beachfront — is the most famous expression of this.

오죽헌 (Ojukheon): The birthplace of 신사임당 (Shin Saimdang) and 율곡 이이 (Yi I) — the mother-and-son pair whose faces appear on the ₩50,000 and ₩5,000 banknotes respectively. The complex of traditional buildings and bamboo gardens is modest but historically significant.

경포대해변 (Gyeongpodae Beach): Gangneung's main beach — wide, clean, and backed by 경포호 (Gyeongpo Lake), a coastal lagoon with a distinctive ecosystem. Less crowded than Busan's beaches in summer.

동해안 해산물 (East Coast Seafood)

The East Sea coast produces some of Korea's finest seafood, and eating it directly at source — in the small port towns and seafood markets along the coast — is one of Gangwon's best experiences.

속초 (Sokcho): 속초 시장 (Sokcho Market) is famous for 순대 (sundae, blood sausage — a Sokcho specialty distinct from the Seoul version), 오징어 순대 (ojingeo sundae, squid stuffed with noodles and vegetables), and the freshest 대게 (daegae, snow crab) from the East Sea.

강릉 주문진 (Jumunjin, Gangneung): A working fishing port with a 수산시장 (fish market) where the morning auction delivers fish to restaurant stalls that serve it raw by 9am.

삼척 (Samcheok): Further south — caves (환선굴, Hwanseon Cave — one of Korea's largest limestone caves), a distinctive coastline, and a quieter, less-visited character.

스키 리조트 (Ski Resorts)

Gangwon's ski resorts served the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and remain Korea's most developed ski infrastructure.

용평 (Yongpyong): The most well-known international resort — hosted alpine skiing events at the Olympics. Multiple slopes across skill levels, good English infrastructure.

하이원 (High1): In the Taebaek mountains — slightly further from Seoul but larger terrain and a full resort village.

비발디파크 (Vivaldi Park): Closest to Seoul (2 hours) — popular with day-skiers and beginners. Less challenging terrain than Yongpyong or High1 but more accessible.

스키 시즌 (Ski season): December through February — snow is reliable, temperatures are cold but manageable with proper gear.

Tip — 해돋이 (Sunrise on the East Coast): 정동진 (Jeongdongjin) station — reachable by overnight train from Seoul, arriving before dawn — is Korea's traditional sunrise destination. The station platform is the closest train platform to the sea in Korea. Watching the sun rise over the East Sea from a cliff-side perch at Jeongdongjin, after an overnight train journey, has been a Korean travel tradition for decades and is as good as it sounds.

교통 (Getting There)

서울에서 강릉 (Seoul to Gangneung): KTX — 1h 54min, ₩27,600. The fastest and most practical option.

서울에서 속초 (Seoul to Sokcho): No direct KTX — express bus from 동서울터미널 (East Seoul Terminal) or 강남고속버스터미널 (Gangnam Express Bus Terminal), approximately 2h 30min–3h, ₩15,000–₩20,000.

강원 내 이동 (Within Gangwon): Distances within Gangwon are significant — car rental from Gangneung or Sokcho allows genuine flexibility. Intercity buses connect major towns but infrequently.
