Work Visa Types (취업비자): E-1 to E-9

Korea has a specific visa for almost every type of foreign worker. Knowing which one applies to you — and what it allows — is the first practical step.

South Korea's work visa system is specific by design. There is no single "work visa" — there are category-specific visas, each tied to a particular type of employment, with different eligibility requirements, restrictions, and renewal conditions. Getting the wrong visa, or working outside its permitted scope, creates legal problems for both the worker and the employer. This article covers the E-series work visas used by most foreign professionals, plus the F-series visas that allow unrestricted work.

E 비자 계열 — 직종별 취업비자 (E-Series: Job-Specific Work Visas)

E-1: 교수 (Professor)

For foreign nationals employed as professors or lecturers at Korean universities and colleges accredited by the 교육부 (Ministry of Education). Requires at least a master's degree in the relevant field, or a bachelor's degree with substantial professional experience.

주요 조건 (Key conditions): Must be employed by an accredited institution; cannot teach at 학원 (private institutes) under this visa.

E-2: 회화지도 (Foreign Language Instructor)

The most common work visa for foreigners in Korea — specifically for foreign language conversation instruction at schools, 학원, and other educational institutions.

자격 요건 (Eligibility):

  • Native speaker of the language being taught (English, Japanese, French, German, Chinese, etc.)

  • Bachelor's degree in any field (English E-2 holders must be nationals of designated English-speaking countries: US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa)

  • Criminal background check (범죄경력조회) — required

  • Apostilled degree certificate — required

  • Medical examination — required

제한 (Restrictions): Tied to specific employer — changing employers requires a visa change notification and sometimes a new visa application.

E-3: 연구 (Research)

For foreign researchers working at Korean research institutions, government-funded research centers, or corporate R&D departments. Requires at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific or technical field, plus a research appointment from a qualifying institution.

E-4: 기술지도 (Technology Transfer)

For foreign experts providing technical instruction or consulting — typically engineers or specialists brought in to transfer specific technical knowledge to Korean counterparts. Usually short-term or project-based.

E-5: 전문직업 (Professional)

For licensed professionals practicing in Korea — lawyers, accountants, doctors, architects — whose credentials are recognized under Korean law or bilateral agreements. Requirements vary significantly by profession.

E-6: 예술흥행 (Arts and Entertainment)

For performers, artists, musicians, athletes, and those in the entertainment industry. Subcategories: E-6-1 (performing arts), E-6-2 (music, visual arts, etc.), E-6-3 (sports).

주의사항 (Caution): The E-6 visa has been subject to misuse — particularly for positions that are entertainment in name but involve inappropriate activities. Korean immigration scrutinizes E-6 applications carefully.

E-7: 특정활동 (Designated Activities)

The broadest professional work visa — covering 68 designated occupational categories not covered by E-1 through E-6. Includes roles in IT, finance, management consulting, engineering, design, marketing, and many others.

자격 요건 (Eligibility): Varies by occupational category but typically requires:

  • Relevant bachelor's degree or higher

  • Relevant work experience (typically 1–5 years depending on category)

  • Korean language proficiency may be required for some categories (TOPIK Level 3+)

  • Employer must demonstrate they could not fill the position with a Korean national (노동시장 테스트, labor market test) for many categories

E-7은 가장 중요한 전문직 비자입니다 (E-7 is the most important professional visa): Most foreign professionals working in Korean companies — finance, tech, consulting, marketing, engineering — are on E-7 visas. Understanding its requirements is essential for professional employment in Korea.

Tip — E-7 포인트제 (E-7 Points System): For many E-7 categories, Korea uses a 점수제 (points system) — applicants accumulate points based on education level, Korean language proficiency, work experience, salary level, and age. Meeting the minimum point threshold (typically 60 points) is required for visa issuance. The 하이코리아 (hikorea.go.kr) website has a points calculator. Higher scores can also accelerate the path to F-2 (long-term resident) status.

E-8: 계절근로 (Seasonal Work)

For foreign workers employed in seasonal agricultural or fisheries work — typically through government-managed programs with specific partner countries. Not generally applicable to professional foreign workers.

E-9: 비전문취업 (Non-Professional Employment)

For unskilled or semi-skilled workers in manufacturing, agriculture, fisheries, construction, and service industries — administered through the 고용허가제 (Employment Permit System, EPS). Workers must be from designated partner countries and are selected through a standardized process managed by the 한국산업인력공단 (HRD Korea).

E-9는 EPS 제도를 통해서만 발급됩니다 (E-9 is only issued through the EPS system): Individual employers cannot directly recruit E-9 workers; they must apply through the EPS process.

F 비자 계열 — 취업 제한 없음 (F-Series: Unrestricted Work Rights)

F-series visa holders can work in virtually any legal employment without employer sponsorship — making them significantly more flexible than E-series holders.

F-4의 중요성 (F-4 significance): Ethnic Koreans who are foreign nationals (재외동포, overseas Koreans) can obtain F-4 status — granting near-unrestricted employment rights. If you have Korean heritage and foreign citizenship, this is worth investigating.
