Translation Tools (번역 도구): What Actually Works for Korean

Google Translate is not the answer. It's not even the right question.

Most foreigners arrive in Korea with Google Translate already on their phone. It works — up to a point. Then they encounter a restaurant menu with regional dialect, a lease contract with legal terminology, or a convenience store clerk speaking at full speed, and "up to a point" becomes apparent very quickly.

Korean is not a language that global translation tools were built around. It is grammatically inverted from English, relies on context and honorific levels that shift meaning entirely, and includes a density of Chinese-origin vocabulary (한자어, hanjaeо) that complicates direct translation. The tools that work best for Korean are the ones built specifically for it — and they are not the ones most foreigners start with.

파파고 (Papago)

papago.naver.com / 앱 (App)

파파고 (Papago) is built by Naver — Korea's dominant search engine — specifically with Korean as a primary language. It is the most accurate general-purpose Korean translation tool available and the one Koreans themselves use when they need translation.

강점 (Strengths):

  • Korean-English translation quality significantly exceeds Google Translate for most practical uses

  • 카메라 번역 (Camera translation): point your phone camera at Korean text — menus, signs, product labels — and receive real-time overlay translation. Accurate for printed text; struggles with handwriting

  • 음성 번역 (Voice translation): speak English, receive Korean audio output — useful for basic communication with speakers who don't read

  • 대화 모드 (Conversation mode): alternating speech recognition for back-and-forth exchanges

  • 한자 지원 (Chinese character support): recognizes and translates 한자 (hanja) in Korean documents

한계 (Limits):

  • Legal and formal documents require human review — the translation will be intelligible but may miss precise legal meaning

  • Dialects (사투리, saturi) — particularly 전라도 and 제주 dialects — can produce inaccurate results

  • Nuanced or contextual Korean humor, idioms, and slang often lose meaning

추천 사용 상황 (Best for): Menus, street signs, product labels, basic conversation, short text messages

구글 번역 (Google Translate)

translate.google.com / 앱 (App)

구글 번역 (Google Translate) is not useless for Korean — it has improved substantially in recent years. But it systematically underperforms Papago for Korean-English because Korean was not a core language in its development.

여전히 유용한 경우 (Still useful for):

  • Translating Korean into languages other than English — French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese — where Papago's coverage is weaker

  • Google Lens camera translation integration, which is smooth for users already in the Google ecosystem

  • Offline dictionary mode when a SIM card is not available

피해야 할 경우 (Avoid for): Legal documents, medical information, nuanced conversation, anything where precision matters

Tip — 번역 비교 (Comparing Translations): For anything important — a contract clause, a medical instruction, an official notice — run the Korean text through both Papago and Google Translate and compare results. Where they agree, confidence is higher. Where they diverge significantly, the text may contain nuance that neither tool is capturing correctly, and human verification is needed.

네이버 사전 (Naver Dictionary)

dict.naver.com / 앱 (App)

For word-level understanding rather than sentence translation, 네이버 사전 (Naver Dictionary) is the standard reference — used by Korean students, writers, and professionals.

강점 (Strengths):

  • Multiple dictionary types in one: Korean-English, English-Korean, Korean-Korean (국어사전), Chinese-Korean

  • Example sentences in context — showing how a word actually functions in natural Korean

  • Pronunciation guides with audio

  • 한자 (Hanja) lookup — essential for understanding formal or bureaucratic Korean where Chinese characters underlie vocabulary

  • User-contributed examples and slang definitions in the Korean-Korean section

추천 사용 상황 (Best for): Vocabulary depth, understanding nuance, checking how a word is actually used, formal Korean documents

DeepL

deepl.com / 앱 (App)

DeepL is the strongest general-purpose AI translation tool for European languages. For Korean, it has improved but still trails Papago for Korean-English.

Worth knowing: DeepL is genuinely useful for translating longer, more complex documents — essays, reports, formal letters — where its sentence-level coherence is better than Papago for sustained text. For documents that will be reviewed by a human translator afterward, DeepL's output often requires less correction than Papago's for structured written Korean.

추천 사용 상황 (Best for): Longer documents, professional writing, preparing text for human review
