Maps & Navigation (지도·내비): Naver vs. Kakao vs. Google
Google Maps will get you lost in Korea. This is not a metaphor.
Most foreigners open Google Maps in Korea out of habit. It loads. It shows streets. It offers directions. And then, somewhere between the route it suggests and where you actually need to go, something goes wrong — an entrance that doesn't exist, a transit direction that misses a transfer, a restaurant that moved two years ago. The problem is structural, not incidental. Understanding why — and what to use instead — is one of the most practical things you can learn before navigating Korea.
구글맵의 한계(Google Maps' Limitation)
The answer is regulation, not capability.
Korea's National Geospatial Information Act restricts the export of detailed map data for national security reasons — the same law that prevents Google from hosting precise Korean geographic data on servers outside Korea. Google has been in ongoing negotiations with the Korean government for years about this restriction. Until it is resolved, Google Maps operates in Korea from lower-resolution, less frequently updated map data than its Korean competitors.
The practical consequences:
실내 지도 없음 (No indoor mapping): Korean subway stations, shopping malls, and buildings are not mapped
대중교통 부정확 (Inaccurate transit): Bus routes and some subway transfers are missing or outdated
자동차 내비 불가 (No car navigation): Traffic data and road updates are limited; Google Maps is not usable for driving in Korea
For walking in obvious locations — finding a major landmark — Google Maps works. For anything more specific, it doesn't.
네이버 지도 (Naver Maps)
map.naver.com / 앱 (App)
네이버 지도 (Naver Maps) is Korea's most comprehensive navigation tool — and the one to default to for almost everything.
강점 (Strengths):
Most accurate and frequently updated map data in Korea
Full 대중교통 안내 (public transit directions): subway, bus, intercity express, including real-time arrival times
도보 경로 (Walking routes): detailed, including building entrances, underground passages, and covered walkways between subway exits
영어 UI (English interface): available — switch in settings. Place names remain in Korean but the interface is navigable in English
실시간 버스 위치 (Real-time bus location): live tracking for Seoul and major cities
리뷰·영업시간 (Reviews and hours): Korean equivalent of Google's POI system — more current for Korean businesses
한계 (Limits):
English-language place search is less reliable than Korean search — searching in Korean (or using copy-paste from Korean text) produces better results
Outside major cities, detail drops
추천 사용 상황 (Best for): All Seoul navigation, intercity transit planning, finding businesses
카카오맵 (Kakao Maps)
map.kakao.com / 앱 (App)
카카오맵 (Kakao Maps) is Naver Maps' primary competitor — built by Kakao, Korea's other dominant tech company. The quality is comparable; the choice between them is largely personal preference.
네이버 지도와 차이점 (Differences from Naver Maps):
UI is considered slightly cleaner and more intuitive by some users
카카오 T (Kakao T) taxi integration is seamless — a single tap from a destination search to taxi booking
Slightly better for finding cafés, restaurants, and commercial locations in Gangnam and Kakao's stronger geographic zones
English UI is less developed than Naver Maps
추천 사용 상황 (Best for): Users heavily embedded in the Kakao ecosystem (KakaoTalk, Kakao T); secondary option to Naver Maps
Tip — 지하철 출구 확인 (Checking Subway Exits): Seoul subway stations often have 10–15 exits, and the correct exit matters — especially in large stations like 강남 (Gangnam) or 홍대입구 (Hongik University). Both Naver Maps and Kakao Maps specify which exit to take and show the walking route from that exact exit. Always check the exit number before descending into the station — navigating underground to find the right exit is significantly harder than knowing it beforehand.
티맵 (T-Map) — Navigation
tmap.co.kr / 앱 (App)
For driving in Korea, T-Map is the standard. It is pre-installed on most Korean rental cars and is Korea's dominant automotive navigation platform.
강점 (Strengths):
Real-time traffic data — the most accurate in Korea for road conditions
과속 카메라 알림 (Speed camera alerts): essential for driving in Korea where fixed cameras are common
음성 안내 (Voice guidance): Korean language; English voice guidance available in settings
주차장 정보 (Parking information): availability and pricing for major parking facilities
EV 충전소 (EV charging stations): integrated for electric vehicle navigation
외국인 주의사항 (Foreigner note): T-Map requires a Korean phone number for full account functionality. The base navigation works without an account, but real-time features require registration. Rental car-embedded T-Map typically functions fully.
시티매퍼 (Citymapper) — Seoul Transportation
citymapper.com / 앱 (App)
Citymapper covers Seoul and provides the most foreigner-friendly public transit interface available — English-first design, with clear visual route display and real-time updates.
강점 (Strengths):
English-first interface — no need to navigate Korean UI
Excellent Seoul subway and bus integration
Clear, visual route cards — shows walking, transit, and total journey time at a glance
Live departure boards for subway and bus
한계 (Limits):
Coverage limited to Seoul and a few major cities — not useful for intercity or rural navigation
Less comprehensive than Naver Maps for finding specific businesses or addresses
추천 사용 상황 (Best for): Tourists in Seoul who want English-language transit directions without learning Naver Maps
카카오 T — Taxi
kakaot.com / 앱 (App)
카카오 T (Kakao T) is Korea's dominant ride-hailing and taxi app — the equivalent of Uber, but operating through Korea's existing taxi system.
강점 (Strengths):
English language interface available
Eliminates language barrier for taxi rides — type destination in English, driver receives in Korean
Upfront fare estimate
Multiple vehicle types: standard taxi, premium (모범택시), van
Integrated with Kakao Maps for seamless destination search
추천 사용 상황 (Best for): Any taxi journey where a language barrier is a concern; late-night transportation; airport pickup
