Baseball & KBO (야구·KBO): A Fan's Guide
Fried chicken, thundersticks, synchronized cheer songs for every batter, and baseball so good it launched players to MLB. Welcome to the KBO.
If you ask most foreigners what sport Koreans love, the instinctive answer is soccer. The correct answer is 야구 (yagu, baseball). The KBO 리그 (Korea Baseball Organization Liga) averages over 5 million total spectators per season — among the highest of any baseball league outside MLB. On warm summer evenings, stadiums across the country fill with fans wearing team 유니폼 (uniforms), following 응원단 (cheer squads) who conduct the entire crowd through batter-specific songs and synchronized hand movements. The quality of play has produced a steady stream of MLB stars. The tickets cost about the same as a bowl of 냉면 (naengmyeon, cold noodles). It is one of Korea's great underrated cultural experiences.
야구의 뿌리 (Roots of Baseball in Korea)
야구 (baseball) arrived in Korea via American missionaries and YMCA educators in the early 1900s, and took root in a way it never did in Japan's other colonial territories. During the 일제강점기 (Japanese colonial period), baseball was one of the few competitive arenas where Korean teams could legitimately beat Japanese teams — which gave the sport an early association with national pride it has retained.
The 한국프로야구 (Korean professional baseball) era began in 1982 with the founding of the KBO 리그, starting with 6 teams. The 리그 (league) has since expanded to 10 teams, each associated with a 연고지 (home region): Seoul's 두산 베어스 (Doosan Bears) and LG 트윈스 (LG Twins), 부산 (Busan)'s 롯데 자이언츠 (Lotte Giants), 광주 (Gwangju)'s KIA 타이거즈 (KIA Tigers), and others. 팀 충성도 (team loyalty) follows regional lines, and 라이벌리 (rivalry) between cities — particularly Seoul-Busan — is genuine and intense.
KBO 리그의 구조 (KBO League Structure)
The 정규 시즌 (regular season) runs March through October, with each team playing 144 games. The top 5 teams advance to the 포스트시즌 (postseason), culminating in the 한국시리즈 (Korean Series) — the KBO's 챔피언십 (championship). The Korean Series typically generates its own news cycle, with 시청률 (television ratings) that rival 올림픽 (Olympic) coverage.
The 리그 is well-organized and the level of play is competitive — a step below MLB but above most other professional baseball leagues globally. Several former MLB stars have played in the KBO 리그 after their American careers ended, and current KBO talent regularly makes the jump to MLB.
응원 문화 (Cheering Culture): What Makes KBO Different
KBO 응원 문화 (cheering culture) is the reason to go even if you don't follow baseball. It is, in a word, astonishing.
Each team has an 응원단장 (cheer leader, literally "cheering corps leader") who stands on a raised platform facing the crowd — not the field — and conducts 수천 명 (thousands) of fans through coordinated 응원 (cheering). Every batter in the lineup has their own 응원가 (cheering song) — a short, catchy melody specific to that player, which the entire home crowd sings in unison as soon as he comes to bat. Individual players' songs often become minor pop culture moments.
추임새 (percussion), 응원봉 (thundersticks, inflatable noise-makers), and occasional 풍선 (balloon) releases punctuate key moments. The 치어리더 (cheerleaders) are a formal, professional part of the game presentation — performing during breaks and leading crowd energy management.
The food is also notably different from most stadiums. KBO fans eat 치킨 (fried chicken) and 맥주 (beer) as a near-universal pairing — 치맥 (chimaek, the combination) being a general Korean cultural practice adapted perfectly to stadium settings. Delivery apps including Baemin operate inside some stadiums. The stadium 먹거리 (food scene) is part of the experience.
Tip — 직관 전에 알아둘 것 (Before You Go): Tickets are available through the official KBO app or Interpark (인터파크). Prices range roughly ₩7,000 (outfield bleacher, 외야석) to ₩25,000 (premium infield, 내야 지정석). The 외야 (outfield bleacher) sections are where the organized cheering happens — if you want the full 응원 경험 (cheering experience), sit there. Bring cash for concessions; some vendors are cash-only.
한국 선수들의 MLB 진출 (Korean Players in MLB)
The KBO has produced a notable stream of 메이저리거 (major leaguers):
박찬호 (Park Chan-ho) was the 선구자 (pioneer) — the first Korean pitcher to play in MLB, debuting with the LA Dodgers in 1994. He won 124 games over a 17-year career, a record for an Asian pitcher in MLB at the time.
류현진 (Ryu Hyun-jin) became one of MLB's most effective left-handed pitchers after joining the Dodgers in 2013, posting an ERA of 2.32 in 2019 — the best in the NL that season.
추신수 (Choo Shin-soo) had a 16-year MLB career (2005–2021) as an outfielder — one of the most complete Korean players to reach the major leagues.
김하성 (Kim Ha-seong) and 이정후 (Lee Jung-hoo) represent the current generation — both transitioned from KBO stardom to MLB in recent years, with 이정후 signing a $113 million contract with the San Francisco Giants in 2023.
국제 대회 성적 (International Success)
Korea has a strong 국제 야구 (international baseball) record:
2000 시드니올림픽 (Sydney Olympics): Bronze medal
2008 베이징올림픽 (Beijing Olympics): 금메달 (Gold medal) — one of the sport's highest moments; sparked a national celebration comparable in scale to 월드컵 fever
WBC (월드 베이스볼 클래식, World Baseball Classic): Korea has reached the semi-finals multiple times; the annual 한일 라이벌전 (Korea-Japan rivalry) within international tournaments carries extra emotional weight
야구 was removed from the 올림픽 프로그램 (Olympic program) after 2008 베이징 and reinstated for 2020 도쿄 (Tokyo). Korea reached the semi-finals at 도쿄 2020.
